Wake up to an unforgettable sunrise over the mountains and drive off road to Wadi Hawer. At this lesser-known wadi you do a short trek, slide down natural water slides into the deliciously cool waters of large pools with waters so clear you can even spot fish!

Head to the stunning Bar al Hikman, a natural causeway of powdery white sands lapped by spectacular blue waters popular with kite surfers, divers and birders. But even though Bar al Hikman has grown in popularity over the years, we’ve managed to find a stunning spot along the coast just for you where you camp under the stars! Shh!

Possibly the most spectacular sight of the day (yes, there’s more!) is the Pink Lagoon

Continue down this amazing coastal route towards Salalah where a wonderful stream-fed pool in Wadi Hanna awaits you with clear, emerald-coloured waters, and a natural waterfall and slide – all in the shade of majestic, metres wide baobab trees. The seeds of these baobab trees are thought to be carried by the same khareef winds that originate in India and sweep past Africa before hitting Salalah and creating its unique micro-climate.

Stop at Wadi Atayr, or ‘Well of the Birds’, one of the world’s deepest sinkholes. It is home to a dazzling number of tropical birds such as the African paradise flycatcher and the distinctive nests of the rufous-tailed weavers. The sinkhole acts like an amphitheatre of sorts for all the birds calls which creates a truly unique experience.

Set off on a trek on the Leopard Trail along the rim of Jebel Samhan where you may spot many birds of prey – including the large African black eagle or Verreaux's Eagle – who love these hanging cliffs. Or you may spot one of the eagle’s favourite prey – the rock hyrax, the cute, furry animals whose tiny tusks may help you guess who their closest relatives surprisingly are (clue: think BIG!).

Camp at night on Jebel Samhan with sweeping views of the Dhofar mountains and even an odd yucca tree or two. You’ll be waking up to one of the most spectacular sunrises as the sun comes up out from the sea of clouds in front of us.

Pack up camp. This marks the end of your trip. We look forward to meeting you again!

 Easy adventure

SUMMER into MONSOON / CHASING THE MONSOON /

Leave the heat behind as you journey across Oman’s spectacular and surprising eastern coast canyoning, camping on the beach, seeing glorious sunrises and sunsets and chasing some unusual wildlife (think tiny-tusked mammals!).

Begin this kaleidoscopic journey from Muscat and head towards the Eastern Hajjar mountains where you camp by the astonishing beehive tombs of Salmah Plateau. These circular towers date back to the Stone Age and stand tall against the gently undulating landscape of Salmah Plateau.

Get your phones and cameras out, this day’s a stunner! First, walk through an underground tunnel through sea cliffs that opens into the stunning, wide Al Khaluf Cave, one the highlights of a cave system formed millions of years ago. Watch the sunlight play across the walls of this large rocky grotto with its soft, sandy floor as you look out over the sea.

This dramatic landscape gives way to the gentle slopes white dunes aptly named the Sugar Dunes. The enormous boulders and rock formations of Rock Garden are our next stop. Do you think you’ll be able to spot the one that looks like Snoopy??

Possibly the most spectacular sight of the day (yes, there’s more!) is the Pink Lagoon. Framed by salt-encrusted shores, the pink waters of this lagoon turn their distinctive colour due to a combination of plankton and algae that helpfully live here. Keep a lookout for the flamingos, spoonbills, and a variety of waders who enjoy these waters.
