Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, perhaps the most well-known tourist attraction, is a stunning piece of Arabic architecture. The mosque was built by the Sultan to celebrate his 30th year of reign. Colorful mosaic tiles, intricate Persian carpets and an impressive 14-meter chandelier boasting 600,000 Swarovski crystals, once the World’s largest are just some of the beautiful features.
The Opera House Muscat was built in 2011 at the request of Sultan Qaboos and is considered the home of arts and culture in Oman. This modern piece of Omani architecture plays host to world-class local and international shows including musicals, ballet and more.
Oman’s National Museum is the largest museum in the Sultanate. Located opposed the Grand Mosque, this state-of-the-art building was completed in 2013 and tells the nations story from the earliest settlement through to the present day. The Sultan’s Palace, Qasr Al Alam, is a true example of modern Islamic architecture and the official home of the Sultan of Oman. Found in the Mutrah Harbour area, this impressive building is surrounded by vibrant garden beds and framed by government buildings. Sultan Qaboos lives elsewhere day by day but attends the palace to on occasions such as welcoming important guests visiting the country. There is an Omani flag at the main entrance, if the flag is raised this is said to be a clear sign that the Sultan is home.
