Muttrah Souq, the main attraction for visitors is a traditional Arab market and is said to be one of the oldest souks in the Arabian peninsula. Dating back to over 200 years, the Al Dhalam (meaning: Darkness in Arabic) Souq is a labyrinth of narrow lanes whose vibrant shops sell an eclectic mix of colorful garments, intricate silverware, traditional Omani daggers and much more.

The Fort was built by the Portuguese in the 1580’s as a defense against the Ottoman army. Standing on top of a rocky hill, Muttrah Fort offers breathtaking panoramic views of the harbor and the corniche.

Bait Al Baranda and Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art are two museums located in Muttrah. Bait Al Baranda museum has many exhibits about the archaeological and maritime history of The Sultanate and Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art replicates an Omani home and tells the story of what life was like in Oman between 1950 and 1975.

The Geo Trekk in the mountain surrounding Muttrah offers impressive views of Muttrah Corinche, Riyam Park and the Sea of Oman. This scenic 2 hour hike is perfect for those who would like to experience the new beauty of Oman whilst remaining in the heart of the city. The first section is a staircase climb following a rusty pipe that was once used to transport diesel fuel from Muttrah to Riyam. The Muttrah hike then descends down through a narrow wadi with water no higher than the knee (depending on rainfall). After walking through a small cemetery you turn up at the back end of Muttrah Souq, after which there is a 20 minute walk to get back to the starting point. The hike is suitable for ages 5+ and hiking boots are recommended but not necessary. Sports shoes will suffice.

Other iconic landmarks in Muscat include The Opera House, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Al Alam Place and The National Museum.

Husaak offers private full day or half day cultural tours which can be combined with the Muttrah Hike or a ride on a traditional Omani Dhow.
