ATMs are widespread throughout the country, even in smaller towns and cities. Visa and Mastercard are the most common forms of payment, and foreign currencies are unlikely to be accepted directly. Tipping is accepted, and highly encouraged!

Oman is ranked one of the safest countries in the world, crime rates are relatively low, and the majority of tourists and locals feel safe exploring. Omanis are known for being super friendly and welcoming, it’s not uncommon for them to invite you into their home to enjoy some dates and Arabic coffee. As with any country, the odd instance of petty theft is reported and as such we would advise you to take the necessary safety precautions and to store passports, money and valuables in a closed bag or hotel safe.

VISAS

Visas, documentation and entry conditions differ between countries. In most cases, a Tourist Visa can be obtained on arrival, but we highly recommend obtaining the appropriate visa prior to arrival. Visas cost between 5 to 20 OMR for 10-30 days and are mandatory for most nationalities. To apply for an e-visa and for more information on the different types of visas available and countries permitted to purchase a visa on arrival, please visit the Royal Oman Police website https://evisa.rop.gov.om/. Some passport holders with an existing Qatar or Dubai tourist visa can visit Oman without additional visas if arriving directly from either of those areas.

Further information on this can be found here: (http://www.rop.gov.om/old/english/dg_pr_visas_dubai.asp). GCC passport holders are visa exempt. Please be aware that admission may be refused if you have an Israeli stamp in your passport.

Climate

Oman is a year-round travel destination, unlike popular belief, some regions here experience the most pleasant weather during the summer months.

Summertime in the eastern the coastal regions is characterized by hot and humid temperatures averaging around 37°C in the hottest months (June to August). It is during this time that the mountainous regions become refreshingly cool with an average daily temperature of 21°C and lows of 18°C. Mountain ranges are the perfect way for locals and tourists to escape the hot and humid city during the summer months. The South experiences drastically different conditions due to the Monsoon season known as Khareef. During this time temperatures range around the md-20’s°C, and thick, wet winds result in a rich green oasis.

This difference in climate provides ideal conditions for Salalah’s abundance of tropical fruit, and the South’s busiest tourism season. During the winter (between November and mid-March), temperatures are at a pleasant average of around 22°C near Muscat. Temperatures in the mountains, however, can drop below 0°C, with the occasional snowfall at high altitudes.

Health & Safety

As with any country, the odd instance of petty theft is reported and as such we would advise you to take the necessary safety precautions and to store passports, money and valuables in a closed bag or hotel safe.

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations when travelling to any destination. Importantly, this includes Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR), tetanus and typhoid vaccines. There are no compulsory vaccinations for those visiting Oman but recommendations include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Rabies for those who will make contact with animals. If you are travelling from a Yellow Fever area a vaccination may be compulsory.

Culture & Etiquette

It is important to respect local values as we explore new areas. Omani custom is highly influenced by Islamic teachings and the local dress code is modest. It is important that visitors respect this by covering knees and shoulders. In more conservative areas it is expected that you cover arms and in mosques and other religious sites, a headscarf is necessary for women.

Drinking in public is illegal, only in certain hotels and resorts will you find alcohol on the menu. Two bottles of wines or spirits allowed on entry into the airport.

It is always best to exercise judgement and sensitivity when taking pictures of others. We also suggest that overt, public displays of affection be avoided in busy areas. In villages, avoid picking fruits or vegetables, as villagers depend on these for their livelihood. Take care to avoid polluting traditional irrigation systems (falaj), as these are used by villagers for domestic and agricultural use.

Infrastructure & Transport

Oman has well-developed infrastructure networks connecting the most important regions.

Travelling by road is the most common mode of travel within Oman. The mountainous regions have some of the longest road networks in the Middle East, with road signs along the way for your guidance. You may be exploring off-road regions during your trip with us or 4x4 car rental agency /Latitude Expeditions/, in which case we will equip you with all the GPS routes you will need. You will also be briefed on vehicle safety in the dirt road and rocky regions. When driving, remember to keep an eye out for camels and goats!

Public transport within the cities is not very common, and a well-equipped vehicle would be vital for a comfortable and easy trip. Taxi’s are available via Marhaba and O Taxi, both have apps for easy booking. There are some local bus routes operated by Mwaslat but they are often limited in their reach.

Eco Tourism

Responsible travel is at the heart of Husaak Adventures and it is imperative that we maintain the regions we explore. Husaak ensure our business practices are ethical and minimize waste. The designed programs take care to not disturb the integrity of the ecosystem and we avoid key routes used by wildlife in Oman. Part of our contribution lies in utilizing our recycling program and eliminating heavy reliance on single use plastics. Before you leave, we will give you designated bags for you to sort any recyclable materials you may have, such as plastics, cardboard and paper. We will advise you on proper waste disposal for most of the areas you will visit. We also provide you with reusable bottles for water. Husaak encourage travelers to engage in beach/coast clean-ups when and if they wish to – Husaak’s 3 Minutes For program asks all of our adventurers to collect rubbish for 3 minutes. Our goal is to leave each destination cleaner than we found it, it’s a simple way for us all to make a difference.
